Thomas Edison – the inventor.

In the early 1900’s Edison had a massive complex of factories and laboratories on a site in West Orange, New Jersey. All of his work was there, in one place, around 5:30 in the afternoon on December 10, 1914 a massive explosion ripped through this complex.

Ten buildings which made up more than half of the site, were engulfed in flames.

What was once a place of invention and productivity and profits was now a site of total chaos and destruction….

Between six and eight fire departments rushed to the scene, but the chemical-fueled inferno was almost impossible to put out in any short period of time.

According to a 1961 Reader's Digest article by Edison's son Charles, Edison calmly walked over to him as he watched the fire completely destroy his dad's work.

Instead of panicking or being upset, as you would expect, the older Edison told his 24-year-old son: "Go get your mother and all her friends. They'll never see a fire like this again."

When Charles objected, Edison said, "It's all right. We've just got rid of a lot of rubbish."

The flames had consumed years of priceless records and prototypes, and his plant's insurance covered only about a third of the total damage.

Later, at the scene of the blaze, Edison was quoted in The New York Times as saying; "Although I am over 67 years old, I'll start all over again tomorrow."

Edison stuck to his word and after spending an exhausting night at the scene watching the fire destroy his life’s work, immediately began rebuilding the next morning without firing any of his employees.

Think about this for a second ….

Imagine ... working your whole life to build something and then seeing it all destroyed at an age when most people are far too old to start over….

Would you have the resilience to pick up the pieces and get right back to work?

Would you believe in what you’re doing so strongly that not even total loss of decades of progress would set you back and cause you to stop?

Most people in Edison’s shoes would have cried out in anger and wept tears of sorrow. Most would have folded up and retired. Given up. Fallen into depression.

Instead he put a big smile on his face and told everyone to enjoy the spectacle.

After a few weeks of work, he got part of the plant up and running again and his company went on to make almost $10 million in revenue the following year.

Edison’s story is a classic example of resilience in the face of terrible adversity.

We run businesses and get knocked down all the time but it’s this kind of resilience that will ensure we get back up when others give up.

Actually, in a thorough study of world’s top entrepreneurs and billionaires, it is this characteristic that proved to be one of the most common, time and time again:

Ability to get up and start over after terrible setbacks and failures.

And, in my opinion, the key to being able to do this is enjoying the process rather than being only focused on the goals.

If you can find something that you love doing so much that you enjoy the actual journey and don’t just pursue it for the money or the end result, you’ll find amazing resiliency in yourself.

That’s why Edison was able to shrug off loss of decades of work and was excited to get right back to work the next day!

And that’s why you must find something to do every single day that you love doing just for the sake of doing.

Then nothing will stop you.

Light bulb on? Come on inside, don't wait.
